CU Leaders

So, you’re a leader now?!

How does it feel?  You might be full of excitement at the prospect of leading your CU or small group and all the possibilities open to you… or you might be feeling tired and pressured by the demands already being made on you.  Perhaps you’re confident, knowing that God has chosen you for this position and will use you over the coming year… or perhaps you’re feeling utterly inadequate, wondering what on earth you’re doing in a leadership position.  Maybe you have a good idea of the year ahead and your role as a leader will involve… or maybe you’re only just beginning to think about it.

Chances are, wherever you’re coming from and whatever your thoughts and feelings on being a leader are right now, at some stage (hopefully earlier rather than later!) you’ll find yourself asking ‘OK, so what do I do?  What do I need to know?  How do I actually lead?’  You may even find the four-letter word made famous by the Beatles, HELP!, escaping your lips!  That’s why we’ve put together this manual – the answer to all your problems (minor exaggeration, and theologically flawed… best stick with the Sunday School answer).
This manual is designed to help new leaders get to grips with the job as quickly as possible, as well as refreshing the memories of returning leaders and acting as a resource to refer back to again and again throughout your time as a leader.  It would be a good idea to take time over this manual – the issues it raises and the biblical material it points you to need patient reflection and wrestling, not just a rushed and cursory glance.  Packed with information, articles, ideas and resources, you’ll be able to use this manual as a basis for further study and reflection both individually and corporately.

A final reminder, though, that all these ideas and methods and resources, great as they are, certainly provide no substitute for a heart that desires God above all else, a mind that through His Word is being transformed by the Holy Spirit and a life increasing in Christ-likeness.  Being a leader (which, as we follow the pattern Jesus set, means being a servant) is an important privilege and responsibility; but there can be no higher calling than to enjoy God’s infinite perfections and to seek to see Him glorified in every possible way.  Until eternity…

‘Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.’  [Hebrews 12:2]
