Peter Kenny

Campus Staff Worker
Munster (Waterford, Cork, Limerick)

Peter hails from a small town in Co. Tipperary which he still very much considers home. At the age of 19, Peter decided to study Applied Physics in the University of Limerick. Though a most enjoyable experience, towards the end of his fourth and final year he realised that his heart lay elsewhere. Having been meeting up with his local IFES Ireland Staff Worker Damien for the latter half of college, he realised the huge help it had been in his desire to follow the Lord Jesus. And so Peter undertook to dip his proverbial toe into the pool of full-time Christian student ministry.

Peter, with the intention of moving on after a year, undertook Relay – the “discipleship and training in a student context” programme. Working primarily in the University of Limerick with the Christian Union and also in Cork, he learned much of what was involved in student ministry (and indeed ministry in general) from Damien his supervisor. It is while on Relay that he forged a lasting friendship with Méabh who was based in Cork and also partaking in the Relay programme.

As his Relay year was coming to a close, it transpired that Damien would be moving to fresh pastures in Kilkenny and so there was a vacancy for his job as Munster CU Staff Worker. Peter, though a little reluctant with regards timing, felt it was right to apply for this role and after successfully completing the interview was delighted to be accepted onto the IFES Ireland team for a three-year period. He is now in the midst of that time and enjoying every moment of how God is at work amongst third-level students in Munster, Ireland and the world. It has provided him with many privileged opportunities from the small-scale bible studies to the large scale, international conferences.

At the start of his second year as a Staff Worker and his 26th as a human, at the top of a waterfall, Méabh responded in the affirmative (i.e. ‘yes’) to his marriage proposal and they recently (July '09) had a beautiful summer wedding. Time and again they have seen God’s hand of guidance in their lives and have been truly blessed by their loving heavenly Father in how He has graciously orchestrated their lives. It is with great excitement and joy that Peter and Méabh are looking forward to all that the future holds.

Peter’s interests include reading, music and sport. Presently he is reading about the early (pre 300 A.D.) church, has just finished Saturday by Ian McEwan and is coming towards the end of the Acts of the Apostles by Luke. He’s listening to old stuff by Oscar Peterson and Louis Armstrong and playing Fionn Regan and Jonny Cash. With regards to sport, he enjoys the fun game of footy and has been known to track back on occasion (usually to pick the ball out of the net.)
